Antique Miniature Portrait in Boulle Frame
Antique Miniature Portrait in Boulle Frame
These are the most mesmerizing mini antique portraits I have ever seen! The Boulle frames are simply stunning. A little history on Boulle- "Boulle work is a type of rich marquetry process or inlay perfected by the French cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle. It involves veneering furniture with tortoiseshell inlaid primarily with brass and pewter in elaborate designs, often incorporating arabesques." They are made out of brass, tortoise shell, and mother of pearl. The craftsmanship is truly unmatched.
Each frame has a hand-painted miniature portrait that is signed. They are in great condition for their age. There are some minor cracks and some of the cuttings are coming lose - consistent with age. This could easily be fixed, or left as is.
The back of the frames are finished with French text from a book. The glass in the frames are convex bubble glass. The brass has beautiful etched floral detailing around the portrait and around the edge of the frame. This could be shined up, but I personally prefer the natural patina. Each has a ring on the top for easy hanging.
Paintings of this era were painted with oil paint, and painted on Ivory or Vellum. These measure 5.75" L x 5" W. There is one of each - I tried to show multiple photos with different angles of each. Please message me if you have any questions or would like to request additional photos.
